Clinical Practice Guidelines

What are AAN Clinical Practice Guidelines?

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) writes guidelines for people with brain, spine, and nerve problems.

  • AAN Clinical Practice Guidelines ("guidelines") are summaries of what we know about different tests and treatments for health problems.
  • Guidelines are based on research and there are steps in developing guideline recommendations where experts like doctors, patients, and other health providers weigh in.
  • Since no two patients are the same, guidelines don’t tell doctors the best way to treat any individual patient.
  • This information helps doctors and patients weigh pros and cons and partner to make the best decision for the individual patient.

Summaries of AAN guidelines for patients and families are available, as well as links to guidelines from other organizations the AAN endorses.

How are guidelines developed?

Groups of 10-20 people (patients, doctors, and other health providers) work together to:

  1. Decide what questions to ask.
  2. Look at all the research available to answer the questions.
  3. Grade the quantity and quality of the research available.
  4. Consider other issues, such as risk, benefits, availability, and personal preferences.
  5. Make recommendations on what we know (or don’t know) about the best medical care.

How do I get involved?

  • People living with neurologic conditions can be involved in developing clinical practice guidelines. Participate in open comment periods. Learn more.
  • Volunteer to be on a guideline development work group. Email us at guidelines@aan.com.
