Letters to the Editor: December 2012/January 2013

Josh Blue

I sustained a "mild" traumatic brain injury in 2005. Someone recommended that I try Dragon NaturallySpeaking software as an assistive technology, but I was unable to purchase it at the time. I had since forgotten all about it—until today, when I read in Neurology Now that the comedian Josh Blue uses an iPhone application called Dragon Dictation ("Serious Laughs," October/November 2012). I was thrilled to learn that this application is free! In fact, I am writing this letter while using it.

With appreciation for all the helpful information Neurology Now has provided me. - Lauren M. Wilton, Milford, MA

THE EDITOR RESPONDS: Thank you for your letter, Lauren. We're glad that the article helped you find this very useful application. For those of you who are interested in the Dragon Dictation app, go to dragonmobileapps.com.

Organ Donation

After reading Dr. Brey's article in the October/November 2012 issue ("Precious Gifts"), I wanted to share my own family's story. I decided to become an organ donor in memory of my little brother, Tony. At 28 years of age, he kissed his pregnant wife and four-year-old son goodbye, like any other morning, and hopped on his motorcycle to work. On the way, someone swerved in front of him, and he was thrown from his bike. The helmet my brother was wearing did not stay securely in place. Tony was transported to a local hospital and pronounced brain dead. Our family was asked if we wanted to consider organ donation. At that moment, you only want your loved one to be left alone. But my brother was already gone, and I know he would have been pleased to help someone who was in need. Through organ donation, my brother enabled four individuals to live. We are so proud of the gift that Tony gave to others. - Kristy Kramer

THE EDITOR RESPONDS: Thank you to everyone who responded to our articles on organ donation. We appreciate you sharing your own stories with Neurology Now readers and for reminding us that organ donation saves lives.

Hope in a Glass

I read with interest the article about medical foods in the October/November 2012 issue of Neurology Now. Physicians are reluctant to recommend anything that is not approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration or that has not undergone rigorous testing. Who can blame them?

I recently formed a tax-exempt foundation with a number of colleagues for the purpose of testing medical foods in clinical trials. We hope to identify what type of benefit these products might have for various medical conditions. We plan to operate without funds from the pharmaceutical companies so as not to be influenced in our results.

Please keep our foundation in mind regarding further articles on medical foods. - Allan L. Hoffman, President, Neurogenesis Research Foundation, West Palm Beach, FL

THE EDITOR RESPONDS: Thank you for contacting us, Mr. Hoffman. We will certainly keep you in mind for future articles on this topic.
