What is lipoid proteinosis?

Lipoid proteinosis (LP) is a rare disease that affects the skin and the brain. Three distinctive features of LP are:

  1. Hoarse voice
  2. Unusual growths (lesions) on the skin and mucus membranes (the moist, inner lining of some organs and body cavities such as the nose, mouth, lungs, and stomach)
  3. Damage to the temporal lobes or the hippocampus of the brain
