Expressions of Courage: Art by People with Epilepsy

A contest gives people living with this disorder a chance to share their feelings of epilepsy with art.

In celebration of Epilepsy Awareness Month each November, the Epilepsy Foundation and Ortho-McNeil Neurologics holds an art contest called "Expressions of Courage." Started in 2002 with the help of Elizabeth Thiele, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Pediatric Epilepsy Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, the goal is to provide a way for people with epilepsy to express themselves through art. A panel of epilepsy advocates, art industry representatives, and health care experts select the winners based on creativity and the ability to demonstrate feelings of living with epilepsy through art. Here are a few of the winning entries for 2009.

Abstract painting of female in brown dress Painting of roaring tiger Painting of gray service dog Painting of sunflowers against green grass and blue sky Colorful abstract painting of face, stars, and other geometric shapes
