Concussion Warning Signs, Symptoms, and Helpful Resources

If you suspect someone has a head injury, watch for these concussion danger signs.

Two youth playing lacrosseAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most people with a concussion recover quickly and fully. But in some cases symptoms can last for days, weeks, or longer; in young children and teens, recovery may be slower.

Symptoms usually fall into four categories:

Thinking/Remembering

  • Difficulty thinking clearly
  • Feeling slowed down
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty remembering new information

Physical

  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting (early on)
  • Balance problems
  • Dizziness
  • Fuzzy or blurry vision
  • Feeling tired, having no energy
  • Sensitivity to noise or light

Emotional

  • Irritability
  • Sadness
  • More emotional
  • Nervousness or anxiety

Sleep Disturbance

  • Sleeping more or less than usual
  • Trouble falling asleep
